Why We Love It...

It’s a happy day when we have some 100% pinot noir Champagne from the Côte des Bar in our grips – especially when it’s from a quality, long-time family grower-producer like Maison Baudry. Sitting ever so pretty at $35 a bottle, this Heritage Brut Champagne has crept up on our list of great values to be had from Champagne – and something you don’t want to let pass you by!

Brothers Armel and José Baudry run the 20-hectare vineyard in the southernmost reaches of Champagne...the 11th generation of their family to do so. Their main priority? To grow healthy grapes with a keen focus on quality using environmentally sustainable methods, as has been the way in their family for generations. Their focus on eco-friendly practices is twofold: it helps preserve their land and helps maintain the health of their vines, all contributing to their mission of creating unique and exceptional Champagnes in the Côte des Bar.

We’d call that a mission accomplished. Made from 100% pinot noir, this Champagne showcases beautiful freshness and a casual finesse. Grown on the region's Kimmeridgian soils (the same found in Chablis) and dating back to the Jurassic age, the vineyards span the hillsides and valleys across the region in a mosaic of different plots and different exposures. This complexity is embraced by the brothers, with single lots carefully vinified and then blended together to create a complex and nuanced wine. The Brut-level dosage keeps everything harmonious and bright, and the three years spent on the lees allow for ample integration.

The wine pours out a pale yellow, with a creamy mousse and plenty of nutty and roasted fruit aromas with a rich, round, and mineral overture. Bushels of orchard fruits, such as gala apples, d’Anjou pears, and golden apricots, get things started, quickly joined by mineral elements of ground chalk and bright, pithy grapefruit that add complexity and lift, with a flaky, buttery pastry note and toasted almonds to soften the iron ore element on the finish. This lingers impressively, without being heavy or unctuous in any way. A beautiful Champagne that has me dreaming of a flank steak taco pairing. Lots of excitement here, and at this price – this is a front-runner for my top house Champagnes of 2024, as it should be yours, as well! Stock up for the summer, friends!
