The village of Le Mesnil sur Oger sits entirely upon east-facing slopes, thickly sheltered by forestland on the hills above – allowing chardonnay to slowly ripen fully, never sacrificing the elegant, high-toned aromatics or the piercing acidity for which these wines are so prized.

The fourth generation of the Robert’s family, Bertrand, still runs the show (with his daughter, Clare, joining him in 2013) carrying on the traditions of his great-grandfather Henri, who began farming the land just after the first World War. That time is now, and Régis has taken serious effort to ensure that the moment is not squandered. Like many growers, the focus here is on the land itself. The conversion to biodynamic and sustainable farming began in 2011, and the dividends have been obvious. With an average age of 33 years old, these vines are in the peak of health, in each of the over 35 different parcels spread across the villages of the Marne Valley.

The Marne’s typical limestone clay soils are responsible for the power and depth of these wines, as is of course, the Marne’s favorite son – pinot meunier. Their method adds stress to the vines without damaging them, instead training the vines to grow stronger, healthier, and more hearty with time. The results of their efforts are wines crafted in classic Bouzy power, with unmatched depth, structure, and intensity. They actively pursue minerality, which is an abundant quality for Cote des Blancs wines but less apparent in this section of the Montagne de Reims, where powerful fruit backbones typically define the style of Bouzy. To highlight and preserve their individual lots, the brothers vinify each parcel’s fruit separately in thermoregulated stainless steel, helping identify each wine’s individual characters before blending. In the grand finale, they practice virtuous patience to allow it all to come together with 5 years aging on the lees – providing ample time for the citrine acidity and chalky minerality to integrate to perfection. And though we’ve featured this once before, we’re simply thrilled to have a little restocking moment with you all. A little backstory to catch all you new folks up… Guillaume Gaucher had become disheartened by decades of the family’s grapes being sold to the massive, lower quality, and bulk-produced Champagne houses like most of their neighbors. Growing up working the land and growing the grapes – he just knew that the quality was there to make delicious Champagne. Eventually, he convinced his father to no longer sell the fruit, and become winemakers in their own right, instead. It was then and there that Champagne Bernard Gaucher was born.

Third-generation grape grower and first-generation recoltant-manipulant (grower producer), the family’s vineyards are in Aube, with separate plots near the villages of Arconville, Urville, and Ailleville, east of the city of Troyes. These plots are planted on the region’s famous Kimmeridgian soils, similar to those found in Chablis to the south. Like many of Champagne’s lesser-known villages, the quality of product can vary greatly among these vineyards, but with the right soil, thoughtful farming, and painstaking detail – top-notch wine can absolutely be the result!

Years later, this house is still vastly unknown, even in the hardest-core Bubbles Monster homes (yes, perhaps even yours!), but I’ve loved the wines from the first sip to now – and I have the greatest of hopes for their future. This is a delicate, fruity, and entirely pleasing wine that also hits all the geeky sweet spots. Creamy and pinot-noir-driven fruits with a wonderfully balanced acidity and just the right amount of frothy bubbles… toasty, zesty, and tingly, all in equal measure. The clay and limestone lend pinot the chance to fully ripen, without sacrificing that almost Chablisienne minerality and freshness. An uplifting jolt of some 10% chardonnay further delineates the wine’s mineral spark and helps this sing at a high frequency. Myriad stone fruits – like bright and crunchy yellow plums – plus croissant dough, golden apples, and a creamy, milky aroma that makes me think of rich condensed milk or fresh cream…it is so good! As I said, it simply hits all the sweet spots, especially at our price! Two years on the lees allows a nice amount of integration and development, and a Brut dosage of 10 grams per liter heightens the fruitiness of the pinot noir. Fun stuff that you’ll virtually never turn down – a glass or two, a bottle or two – this is one of those bottles that seemingly fits all situations. The rise in quality and reputation can be attributed to one man, Francis Egly. The grapes are pressed in a refrigerated, supremely delicate, press designed to limit the amount of oxygen that can enter the juice in the process. Fermentations are in both barrels and steel tanks, followed by exceptionally long aging (a minimum of 3-4 years on the lees) for all of his wines (and longer still for his top cuvees and vintage wines). Advocate’s chief Champagne expert, William Kelley, had this to say:

“Francis Egly has produced another profound Champagne with the 2013 Brut Grand Cru Millésime. If the monumental 2008 stands out for its power, structure and intensity, the 2013 is distinguished by its harmony, finesse and completeness; both vintages are very great wines but thus quite different in style. Wafting from the glass with scents of Anjou pear, crisp yellow apple, freshly baked bread, clear honey, iodine and fresh mint, it's full-bodied, ample and pillowy, with a layered, concentrated and effortlessly balanced core of fruit, uniting precision and sensuality to compelling effect. Girdled by racy acids and animated by a delicate pinpoint mousse, it concludes with a long, penetrating finish. Is this the most elegant wine Egly has produced to date? It's certainly among the most compelling that this high quality but initially underrated Champagne vintage has delivered.”

Worth noting too is his recommended drinking window – basically now with the potential for drinking as far down the road as 2050! Richard’s longtime neighbor, the legendary Anselme Selosse (who has run one of Champagne's preeminent houses, Jaques Selosse, since 1980), served as Richard and Veronique’s mentor as they transitioned from growers to grower-producers (a récoltant-manipulant). More citrus follows on the palate as pomelo and orange notes counterbalance rich and luscious notes reminiscent of a Parisian bakery. The grapes are fermented and aged as though they were to be bottled like White Burgundy, sometimes spending up to two years in barrel before bottling, before a minimum of three years on the lees before becoming world-class Champagne. An Extra Brut dosage of 3g/liter at disgorgement (even though labeled as Brut, Richard and Véronique never really go above Extra Brut levels) completes the winemaking process, but the wines are held for an additional 30 months prior to release. That’s a lot of investment into each bottle, and I’d love to be a fly on the wall for the back and forth between their accountant about the cost and benefit of such a course. And yet, when grown, harvested, and produced with care – such as this stellar example – the result is something else entirely – floral and perfumed, to be sure, but with a delicate freshness, lingering softness, and myriad other goings-on to make for a complete and harmonious wine.

The Dal Bianco family has spent the last 77 years farming the lands of Conegliano e Valdobbiadene in the land of Veneto, just west of Friuli.
